1/4 to 3 sheet Plywood/OBS Plans
Post Body

A Collection of Stuff I think is Neat/Efficient using plywood/obs sheets

It got so insane there is a jet plane "backpack" & a speedboat!

A HANDFUL are 1/5th sheet for ppl with a CNC unit, OR YEARS WORTH OF JIG SAW TALENT

  • A few are 1/8 sheet
  • There are even 4 "Sub-1/8" sheet plans (Drafting Pad, Vise, Router Plane & Saw Push/Miter Guide)
  • The "kids castle" is "3 sheets", of OBS,..... and 2x sheets of HDF

There is some ODD/WEIRD STUFF HERE! make sure you read the titles of projects when skimming

NOT ALL HAVE A PLACE HOLDER IMAGE!

Note: Most "CNC" plans can be done with careful jag saw work

The $150 "Starter" Wood Shop ($200 tax/safety in)

$60 in Tools $100 in OBS $15 misc (safety) $25 tax = $200

  • After thought, but might as well price it, for everyone, because I looked it up obsessively

You'll need these to start > 5x sheets of 5/8" OBS will do, for ALL WOOD USED, About $100

  1. Example: My local Habitat For Humanity sells Good D-Grade, 5/8 inch, 4x8ft OBS for $21.25 each
  2. I can buy "small bulk" (5 ) for a discount ($100 tax).
  3. It may have tape/paint drips on it (surface/cosmetic), but its straight/unchipped for $20
  1. Plans: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a_pCQyo4AUqV_XEdy2VnD7qvPAM5X4gc/view
  2. 2.5 sheet plans: https://www.finewoodworking.com/fwnpdffree/011181054.pdf
  1. DO NOT stand on stools, stand on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qoj_ZgLScY

If your a sketchup pre, best "modular" workshop:

sideways pic, is the DIY \"Router Plane\"

If you have no tools yet: $60 Starter tools (Amazon returns & Most "Dollar stores")

$25 in POWER TOOLS ($5 new, amazon returns, self tested pre-purchase in decent starter quality)

  1. Circular Saw with Small/Safe Table Saw base (inserts in base, toggles) (yes its $5, I bought a few...)
  2. Dremel kit with Miter & Jigsaw head/mode > also make a plywood "router plane" for it
  3. Small Random Orbit Sander (palm)
  4. Wet/Dry 1.5 Gallon Shop Vac with "dust/fume catcher hood attachment/head"
  5. Power Drill/Driver, with hammer mode

$35 in NON-POWER TOOLS (& hardware, all at "dollar stores", $1 to $1.25 new, in decent starter quality)

  • compare Habitat For Humanity prices, if they have over stock stuff
  1. Safety glasses
  2. LED Clip on lamp (both, for glasses, or as table lamp)
  3. 25x Drill bit kit (15x hs/7x flat/3x extenders)
  4. 14Pcs Pocket Hole Jig Kit (insert type sadly)
  5. 11x Socket / 26x driver bit / 2 port ratcheting hand driver kit (37pcs)

  18. Paint bush kit (tray, opener/agitator, 5x bushes)
  19. Woven plastic drop tarp 64sq ft ("burlap" thicker colored type, not thin clear type)

added Hardware (at "dollar store" as above, or Habitat For Humanity, open box is $0.75)

  1. 75x count box of 1" and 2" nails and screws , plus some 1/4" bolts/wing nuts (5 boxes)
  2. Sandpaper multi pack (18 sheet)
  3. Gorilla Wood Glue 8oz (its the cheapest "good" wood glue, imho)
  4. Durham's Wood Fill, 1lbs Water Putty (for a $1.25, this is what you get, but 16oz!)
  5. ($2) Minwax clear oil-based interior polyurethane wood stain (943ml = 160sq ft covered)

Main Post

For "most" furniture uses:

D-Grade OBS is same cost/200% stronger than HDF & 50% cheaper/90% as strong as than plywood

  • Bent/Chipped sheets are just NEVER worth buying at full price (never ever imho)
  • Worst to best: MDF/PB (never use, both sucks at cost) > HDF > OBS > Plywood
  • 5/8"( ) Plywood/OBS can sub for "light, 1by" lumber, generally
  • 1.25"( glued with 1/4", for 1.5") Plywood/OBS can sub for "light, 2by" lumber, generally
  • HDF is superior to BOTH equal thickness particleboard & ANY MDF, if not full load bearing
  • Engineered wood has a capstone of plywood, in all but the most extreme/costly methods

I WOULD NOT EXCEED LOADS OF "EQUAL TO A 500LBS PERSON LIVE/DEAD LOAD"

How Much Weight Can Plywood Hold? Plywood Strength Chart, Load Calculator

HDF Wall/Ceiling

  1. Sand > finer sand > finer, finer sand https://youtu.be/_ZAyCbU3oU8
  2. Sheath the wall/ceiling assembly with sheets of HDF, nailed into the wall studs. Mark the location of the wall studs onto your HDF sheet before nailing them, with lines spaced on center as you spaced the wall studs. Screws can be used in place of nails, but it will take a little more time.
  3. Patch and cover any defects in the surface of the HDF, seams between the HDF sheets, as well as nail or screw heads with patching compound applied with a putty knife. Sand smooth with some sand paper wrapped around a block to the surface of the HDF once dry.
  4. Paint or wallpaper as you like.

OSB Floors

  1. Sand > finish > buff, as though hardwood https://youtu.be/_ZAyCbU3oU8

FINE Finished OSB floor

Instead finish with a polyurethane coat, which will be extra work, but not only will it be heavy-duty, it will look incredibly glossy and clean with a smooth top. The polyurethane will also be important in the rooms with moisture.

Light, on material use, Legs Method:

  • outer brace beats top pinch with larger contact area for material used
  • Tri emulates pedestal
  • Quad is better for foot traffic than edge legs

Quad units = top of legs, are also brace
