I’ve been using Turo as a driver since it was founded as RelayRides. This week, I gave it my first shot as the one renting the vehicle out.
I listed my personal 2015 Cadillac for rent locally at the top rate of $179/day. It’s wrapped, lowered, and has a top of the line Alpine stereo system.
2 days after listing it up I get a qualified renter wanting to take it for a “day with the family.” He’s local, has 10 reviews that are all 5-star, and everything seemed to check out.
I met him up, checked his ID and snapped a pic of it and a few of the Escalade then let him on his way. He rented it for 24 hours.
He returned my Escalade today in decent shape, but there was a cocktail spilled in the back and he was saying something about the stereo having a problem “after only 1.5hrs of use.”
Well, I flipped the Escalade on right then and there to find my stereo completely fried. He played dumb but said if I needed anything to let him know and he went on his way.
I immediately brought the Escalade to my mechanic who confirmed that the subwoofer and amplifier were both shot. The reason? Playing them too loud for too long.
After that I checked to see if the dash cam was left on or if they’d unplugged it. Sure enough, it was on. I went through the footage and found hours of the music blasting as loud as it could go. I also found a few clips of them talking about blowing the speakers.
I contacted the driver and let him know that my mechanic would be getting a quote tomorrow and that he would be responsible for it.
What a great welcome to being a vehicle provider on the Turo platform! It’s no wonder you guys are constantly trashing this app. I don’t think I’ll be renting anything out every again.
