Do slip mat materials make a large difference?

Trying to create a proper turntable set up and have found some cork slip mats I really like on Etsy. However I’m new the vinyl and all that jazz so not too sure what’s the difference between cork and other materials. Do they make a large impact on sound? I don’t mind too much about small tweaks in sound. I’ve a steeplechase 5 in 1 if that matters.
