So apparently there are ~85 million Turkish speakers in Türkiye and that's what the official statistic is based off of. However there are other countries where people speak Turkish but they are a minority in these countries or they speak a language very similar to Turkish as a native language and so therefore can pick up on Turkish fairly easily.
So with that being said, how many speakers would there be in total that could understand and speak Turkish from Türkiye proper and vise versa?
EDIT: did some research and found out Turkish proper is in the Oğuz subcategory, so therefore related to Türkmen, Azerbaijan Turkish, Salar, Gagauz, Qashqai, Iraqi Türkmen and a few others.
I was able to read them with some ease but as for listening I was at a loss. Azerbaijan Turkish seemed somewhat understandable while Salar sounded like someone trying to speak Turkish in a really strong Chinese accent.
