One of my profs sometimes used the wink emoji emoticon and it was plain weird but we never figured out how to tell him. It wasn't inappropriate, just that he didn't really know what it meant and was only trying to make his mails a little friendly and informal for these teenagers, which is basically impossible to pull off for someone born in the 1950s.
