I once took a course from another department, and because of some technicality, I didn't have access to their library (which had only a few copies of the textbook anyway). The prof. (and author) called me after the first class to let me know that I was the only non-deptt. student taking his course, and he was happy to see someone expand their horizons this way. So he gave me a copy of his own for the entire semester. He also gave me a little leeway as I was more of a beginner than my classmates, and assured me that I would have library access if I took more of their courses later. I ended up doing inter-disciplinary work in the area for my thesis, which was definitely thanks to him.
