Hey folks,
First of all, apologize if there is a specific sub for this, but looked around and didn't see it. Was curious if anyone is familiar with the Tulsa Remote program? In short, they'll help facilitate a move to the city for remote worker across the country.
I was approved for the program pre-covid, but then everything went to shit for a couple of years. Am starting to re-open the possibility and doing some research on housing, things to do, etc. Currently based in New England, which has become an absolute nightmare with housing and affordability.
Currently looking between Tulsa and Austin at the moment, but curious for any input or things to do, things that suck, overall community vibes, etc.
I am an alum. I like it here.
From my observations, folks that are from smaller towns and cities tend to love Tulsa. For folks from major cities (NYC, Chicago, LA), it is a bit of an adjustment.
All the restaurants tend to close early. There is plenty for me to do, but I don't want to do a whole lot. I am happy to see the occasional play or concert or comedy show. I am cool with seeing an art show like every few months. I like the dog parks and walking next to the river. I like the library and coffee shops. I don't expect or want to be out every night doing stuff.
Other concerns to be aware of: abortion is illegal here. Marijuana requires a prescription. We are at a strange moment in politics, especially in regards to education. If I had kids, I would really do some research before putting them in schools here because the legislature is off the chain. Tulsa is a mixed bag insofar as conservatives and liberals. Outside of Tulsa and OKC is very conservative.
That said, buying a house here is ridiculously affordable. Tulsa has everything that I need in a city to be healthy and happy.
