Damaged stove pays?
Post Body

I’m struggling to be objective and need some advice. My wife and I are finishing up a 2 month house sit that has been very good thus far, great home owners. A couple days ago I was making a pot of coffee on the induction stove, went to the bathroom and when I returned the water had boiled off, the stovetop had gotten too hot and had turned off. Unfortunately, the overheating damaged the stove and it now requires a repair tech to fix it. A few things:

  1. I neglected the stove while it was on, came back a few minutes too late and the stove was damaged. My fault.
  2. Most induction stoves, to my understanding/experience, have a temperature sensor that unpowers the burner when it gets too hot. This stove didn’t turn itself off until it was too late, perhaps an equipment malfunction. (Confirming with tech about this tomorrow)
  3. We have a Premium sitter membership, which I thought offered insurance for accidents like these, but it turns out that it only offers insurance for bodily harm related accidents. Unfortunately, the homeowner only has a Basic membership, which doesn’t qualify for the accident insurance that is included by the Standard and Premium homeowner membership levels. We didn’t know to ask about this in advance, but it only would have been an additional $70 for them to have this insurance relative to the Basic plan, frustrating!

So I’m curious, what do people think? Should we pay for 100% of this repair? Do we split it? Its certainly my fault that this accident occurred, but it seems to me that the homeowner’s decision not to purchase the insurance means that they have some responsibility for potentially making this mistake more costly.
