I’m very picky with stories that contain trans characters and I have yet found a book that illustrates what being trans is like authentically.
Currently reading ‘The Art of Being Normal’ and I can’t recommend it at all. The author isn’t trans and it shows. The characters aren’t written as “girl who has a male body” but as “boy who wants to be a girl” which is a significant difference.
I’m not saying a cis author can’t write a good trans character but they have to go at it with the right mindset or else they’ll fail. They don’t experience dysphoria so they can’t even write the characters inner monologue about it correctly.
Don’t get me started when these writers try to push an all inclusive gender narrative that’s just characters liking to crossdress or ‘not be perceived by society’.
Because of this I’ve been writing my own book with the characters and messages I want to be shown to the world. Will it ever be published? Who knows, probably not. But it’s a nice stress relief after reading bad trans stories and hearing the modern political side of it.
