The bathroom debate and customer service

Post Body

I’m a manager at a chain restaurant that’s right next to a outlet mall that’s popular with tourists. We get a lot of foreigners during the summer and spring mainly from Asia and the Middle East. I say this because our bathroom laws are different from the ones they’d most likely be used to causing cultural shock and misunderstanding.

I’ve thought of multiple times about what would happen if we get a complaint about a transwoman being in the women’s bathroom one day. It has never happened here before and there has been trans people both men and women that has come through here as customers that I was able to clock. I know for a fact that if it happens while I’m there, I will be sent to fix the drama. Not just because I’m one of the managers but because some of the staff has known me before I started hormones and changed my name. It makes since to send me in to deal with it.

I don’t think of it often but I get reminded of the possibility every so often. As a transmedicalist and truscum person, I wouldn’t want a false case to be excused in the sense of being politically correct and assuming that the person isn’t lying about being trans. But as a trans person, I wouldn’t want to immediately charge the person unless there’s clear evidence of assault that happened.

I would want to speak to both parties about what’s happening to see the situation. I would go talk to the assumed trans person and show them that I’m also trans by my ID so they don’t feel targeted just for being trans. But that doesn’t mean I’d excuse bad behavior in my restaurant.

If a physical fight happened because of this situation between two or more customers, I’d have to get the police involved and not take sides.

I don’t know exactly what I should do in a case like this. There’s no set training for this and everyone has a different opinion.
