Trumpet takes the fun out of music for me (most of the time)
Post Body

Just to give a little background. I’m a 22 year old musician and I’ve been playing and creating music since I was a little kid. The trumpet has been my main instrument for the last 12 years. It’s been a journey. I’ve specialized in jazz and managed to gain some very solid skills on the horn.. to the point where many bands in my music scene want me to play with them. I do, all the time. I love it. But this instrument drives me crazy.

Besides playing the trumpet, I spend a considerable amount of time playing the piano, guitar, and producing my own music. These instruments fill most of my time when I really think about it. I genuinely feel like the physical challenges of maintaining my skills / progressing on the horn is always limiting to the creative vision I have in my mind. I don’t want to quit, in fact I’d love to get better. I still spend a considerable amount of time practicing trumpet, but I feel myself drifting in a new direction.

Has anyone dealt with these frustrations? Specifically multi-instrumentalists? I feel like I have so much fun playing anything but trumpet.. the horn is so physically demanding. I have a ton of respect for those who can do it but damn man. I wish I didn’t have to spend an hour of my day just trying to get where I need (and I do regularly).

sigh

I know that great things can’t always come easy but I do envy my piano/guitar player friends for how casual it can be. Trumpet never feels casual
