Mouthpiece for Piccolo?

Post Body

Hi all,

Pit show player here looking for some different picc mouthpiece options. A while back I acquired a Schilke P7-4 after wanting to change piccolos, but have been struggling to find a compatible mouthpiece for daily use. My main mouthpiece for the larger horns is a Bach 1-1/4C, and on picc I’m currently using a 7E with a 28 throat/117 backbore.

A few extra points that might help narrow it down:

1.) I find the 7E to produce a nice sound, but I feel like I have almost no maneuverability on it, or very good range. This is the same issue if I go big as well - I tried a 1.25 rim picc mouthpiece and it was a lovely sound, but not at all a possible picc mouthpiece for me.

2.) Years ago I tried out a slew of 7EW, 7D, and 7DW mouthpieces, but it was on a different horn and early in my picc experience, so maybe that is the right direction?

3.) I have also tried Storks, in various sizes, and sadly the rim just doesn’t work for me.

I live by the idea that if you can’t play high on your larger horns, the piccolo won’t help you, but I’m finding that I can’t manage the high register as well on the piccolo as I can on my regular Bb trumpet. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks!
