Currently I have a Yamaha 11b4, but I want to experiment with different mouthpieces that could potentially aid me in bettering my range or tone, or both! My private instructor recommended trying a Bach 3c, however he did admit that he's not very familiar with Yamaha mouthpieces and how the 11b4 compares to the 3c, so he just gave me his best estimation on what I should try. My band director has a spare 3c mouthpiece that she let me borrow, and I experimented playing with it. Obviously, since I'm not used to it, I struggled a bit with hitting higher notes and having good tone with the 3c. And I am now reconsidering getting a 3c because I thought that the wider rim would help with tone and would ease up on my lips more than the 11b4 does, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Again, I've barely used the 3c for more than half an hour right now, so my judgement may not be the most trustworthy. But I'm interested in what some more experienced players have to say: should I try making the 3c my primary mouthpiece, try a different one, or just stick with the 11b4?
You will need to give it some decent play to get your embouchure to reset to the mouthpiece. I still use a 3C today. I find I get much more fuller and richer tone from a 3C, but your mileage may vary. I also played a schilke mouthpiece which I found more comfortable while I had braces in high school
