Spit draining

I have a 30 year old Benge that my middle school son is now using. It’s still in good shape with a nice sound but it has a problem draining spit. No matter how much the spit valve is used, it seems an excessive amount remains in the trumpet. Frequently other techniques have to be used to drain the excessive spit.
This has not always been a problem.
Any idea on how to resolve this?
