Could link ever be female? (in lore, not in terms of if they'd ever do it)

We know ganon has to be male. and Zelda has to be female. But what about link? Link doesnt seem to reincarnate in the same fashion as the other 2, with physical characteristics usually being more varied. And there must have been hundreds or thousands of links over however long the span between skyward sword and breath of the wild is. I find it hard to believe that the 50% chance link was born a woman never happened, and yet it seems consistently, even heroes we dont see on screen are all male, why?
