Casual player wanting to get into shifting.

I'm pretty new to a lot of the simulation aspects of the game and I realize shifting would give me greater control when it comes to picking up speed, slowing down, and stopping. I know it's extremely basic, but can someone walk me through how to shift? I've never driven a car with manual transmission and I'm brand new to the idea of it.
