Commute to Ă˜rland?

Hi /r/trondheim, I'm an American considering a position in Ă˜rland. Is there a reliable way to commute there from Trondheim? I see there is a passenger ferry that runs a fair amount, but is it reliable / does it run in poor weather?
Also, are there other places I should consider living?
Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks!
