I have had trichotillomania for over 25 years. It's been getting bad again the last year. I was also diagnosed with ADHD this past year, which made me realize the trich stems from that.
Anyways, so I called up a local hair salon...
Me: "Hi, I'm looking for a salon that has a hair stylist that has experience with trichotillomania" Salon: "OK, 1 moment" Pause, can hear people talking in background Salon: "I'm sorry but we don't know what that is?" Me: "It's a condition where people pull their hair out?" Salon: "Oh, ok" says to background ppl what I just said "Well, what are you looking for?" Me: "A haircut that helps cover thin spots and is easy to maintain" Salon: "Well, you can come in and we can see what we can do for you?" Me: "Nevermind thank you"
Then I look online and there's like no resources to help with finding friendly salons. How is it that hair salons don't even know what trichotillomania is, let alone have experience with it? Is it really that rare? I don't want to be this stressed out about my hair. I am always pulling it into a ponytail and there's really thin spots you can see now even in a ponytail. Sigh.
I've also had super bad experiences. At one point I didn't cut my hair for a year. People can be very disrespectful and rude. They pointed out my bald spots, my uneven growth and said that it was super noticeable. They made me feel like utter shit. That is when I decided I'd cut my hair at home. Since then I found a hairdresser that gets it and go exclusively to him.
Hope you find the one!
