Hey guys, I know Fin takes anywhere from 3-24 months to really start working, but I'm at a point where I can probably make a call between switching from 1mg of Fin to Dutasteride (my doctor is weird). He put me on 1mg and wouldn't bump me to 5mg so I could just split it while it's insured. I've been on it for ~3 months and I'm either having slow or no effects yet so I know in my next checkup next month he'll likely give me the choice to switch to either 5mg Fin (where I'd just quarter it and keep taking 1.25mg) or switching to Dut. After this visit I'm moving and likely to have to switch providers. In an ideal world I could stay on fin until at least next year but since this might be the easiest way to get switched to Dut for me should I take it? Are there any reasons to ride out finasteride if dutasteride is right there?
I guess the main question without my backstory is: is there any reason to not jump to Dutasteride at the first opportunity, ie: 1) decreased efficacy years down the road that would be prolonged if I stay on fin first and see if that gives results, 2) higher side effects (I haven't had any with fin), 3) any other reason I haven't considered yet?
Any advice or insight is welcome, I know dutasteride is considered a miracle drug on here, I'm just wondering if there's any reason to not make the jump as soon as possible and give finasteride it's full chance to start working before trying to switch a year from now if it still doesn't work.
