How to tell between a good shed (from starting an effective treatment) and bad shed (from stopping one)?
Post Body

I’m 29F. In June I went to a cosmetic dermatologist seeking fin or dut. The derm told me the trichologist at the clinic would very likely prescribe it, but she could only prescribe me oral min and I’d have to see the trich in 3 months. I took the oral min for those 3 months, partially because I was curious if I’d respond, but partially as a gesture of good faith that I was willing to try other reccommendations.

Well, as usual, the trich refused to prescribe because of teratogenicity. Around that point I noticed my body hair was getting long and fluffy to the point my boyfriend was noticing, it was freaking me out so I snapped, went off oral min and ordered fin off AllDayChemist.

  • I went off oral min in August. My hair was noticeably thicker than baseline but had lots of excess fluffy facial/body hair.
  • From August-November I took 1mg fin to test for sides and experienced reduced shedding.
  • I noticed that my excess body and facial hair had gone away by around November.
  • From November-present I took 2.5mg fin which is a common starting dose for females.
  • In December I noticed that my body and facial hair were markedly reduced from their natural state (a nice bonus I didn’t expect). I also noticed my head hair had started to shed a lot (full-diameter hairs) again.
  • In the last couple weeks I began to notice significant thinning and I began to shed tons of miniaturized hairs (0.5”-2” tapered/extremely fine hairs). I have never seen so many tiny miniaturized hairs before.

Obviously I knew logically that I would experience a dread shed from fin if it was effective for me, but actually experiencing it I am freaking out a little bit. What if those weren’t old miniaturized hairs that needed to be replaced, but the first round of hairs resurrected by the oral min, and now I’ll be worse off than before?
