Karma-whoring: death of a subreddit [3]
Post Body

Ents and entmaidens, I humbly propose that r/trees' recent (and in my opinion frightening) turn towards blatant karma-whoring will turn our humble grove into a reddit backwater. The progression was subtle at the beginning, but with this rash of "I'm x karma away from 420 karma" I feel as though I must speak up. This subreddit ought to be about having interesting discussions/showing each other cool videos, not the acquisition of arbitrary karma. We can change, the time is now.

I assume you're all asking yourselves at about this point "So, Prerus, how do we go about making such a major change? It seems like it would be pretty difficult." Well ent-family, it totally depends on how we approach this problem; during my thinking on the matter, I can see 3 clear solutions:

  • Solution 1 We might be able to eliminate karma (on the user's side) altogether. If we do this, up/down toking is about the link itself, not the accumulation personal karma which I can see raising the quality of posts
  • Solution 2 We separate r/trees karma from karma on the rest of reddit. This would (hopefully) make people less inclined to the whoring of karma since it only affects this subreddit
  • Solution 3 The community as a whole stops with these cancerous posts (are people generally good, or self serving?). Can we as a community come together and agree to stop wasting front page space for the sake of the community? I'd like to hope so.

I hope we can come together to fix what I see as a major threat to the health of our fine subreddit.
