How long should you hold a hit for?

Iv been smoking for about 4 to 5 years now and for the first mabey year to year and an half i didnt even know you needed to inhale. Now for the question how long should i hold the hit? My parent told me 10 seconds and some people say you dont. I do both and get too stoned to tell the difference. Im intrested to know what the internet thinks.
