For those former fans on here like myself, what was that *one thing* (if there is only one thing) that made you decide to give up your fanhood?

Post Body

I’ve been recommended this sub a lot lately. And, confession, yes, the title is very much true for me. I fell hard into the Taylor trap last year, even though I was hearing all these horrible things about her jet usage and borderline pedophilic dating behavior.

I kept biting the bullet and listening to her music until like the middle of March this year. And, an even worse confession, she was genuinely the only artist I liked close to on the same level as Lorde, my current favorite.

Anyways, it’s complicated, but the reason I gave up listening to her although I really liked her music was that the overexposure was making it really hard to defend her recent actions. I knew things like the Brazil incident, her quasi feminism, her making slightly better Midnights’ songs for 1989 TV, overworking with Jack, etc, were all wrong, but I was so into her music that I didn’t want to call her out directly for it.

I saw tons of people criticize her both as a person and as an artist (repetitive lyricist, being too “milquetoast” and non innovative, etc), and I didn’t know if I could defend her there.

This was admittedly having a toll on my mental health, so I decided I shouldn’t be a fan of someone whose billionaire status and insistence to make music that aggravates a large majority of people who want something more “daring”, because it just wasn’t fun anymore. Also, I kind of changed my major to one super focused on the environment, so listening to Taylor and her ludicrous jet usage felt like selling my soul at that point.

I heard how badly people thought Tortured Poets was the month after (especially with the 15 track anthology), and, even though I was a big fan of hers just a month before, I didn’t bother listening to a single track. At all

Again, please don’t read this incorrectly as me defending her. I just wanted to vent my regrets of being a fan of hers, and see if anyone had similar stories to share.
