Can Airlines Cancel Your Ticket?

We bought round trip Business tickets, Seattle-Quito, for $1600 a person which was a terrific deal. Now $6000ish. We had seats selected, tickets confirmed, credit cards charged for months and months. We're here at the check in counter, they weren't able to check us in, took 40mins , and they can't explain to us why they canceled us when we're otherwise on time and well sorted. Can they see my ticket price, realize their mistake,, and get a second kick at it?
