What language should I speak in Barcelona?

Hi everyone! I’m travelling to Barcelona next week, and I don’t know a word of Catalan. I speak perfect English and passable Spanish, and I’m not sure which one to use in Barcelona.

I’m Canadian so I’m very familiar with the sensibilities of breakaway regions when it comes to majority languages (French Canadians are NOT fond of English speakers!), so I’d be worried about getting a frosty reception if I spoke Spanish.

What would you recommend? Should I speak to people in English or Spanish in Barcelona?
