What is the cheapest way to get from LA to NYC next month? and any advice on Russian tourist Visas?

Cheapest I can find one way is LA > NYC is ~$260 on a 70 hour train. Or around $60 more for a flight (which assuming I can't find anything else cheaper, that is probably what I will be doing). After being spoiled with European flight prices, 300 to cross the country is ridiculous. I paid less than that Berlin > San Fransisco, with less notice.
I fly out of JFK to TLV, stay for a few weeks, then I have a 20 hour layover in Moscow, which I would like to be able to leave the airport for to see the city and some old friends. Just curious if anyone has any advice on that front, as I've heard some horror stories about visa problems in Russia.z
