Looking to do a "Grand Circle" tour from Vegas in March. What type of car?

Me and my girlfriend are flying to Vegas and looking to do the above itinerary. We would be renting a car. My parents did a similar trip and my dad recommended we get a 4x4. Is that good? I've been in the area before but I was on a motorcycle and didn't go to the parks.
