My dad just spent the last 2 days telling me what NOT to do while travelling. So now I want to know what I should do while travelling!
Post Body

Arrive

14 October sometime

Length:

  • San Francisco - 4 days

  • Seattle - 7 days

  • Boston - 7 days

  • Somewhere in Vermont - 6 months (working)

Budget

  • On my own with about USD$2000. I'm wanting to spend as little as possible until I can find work. Flights (external and internal) are organized already, and the only nights that I'm paying for (at this stage) are in San Francisco. Otherwise I'll be staying with family or renting when I start work.

Interests

I'm always up to explore new cities and environments. I've been to America twice before, once 17 years ago, and once 10 years ago. So it will mostly be new to me. I love biking and skiing (hence Vermont), so anywhere that I can grab a bike and explore (hopefully October won't be too late for this, that said, I'm fine with the cold!). I'm not really one for tourist traps, I like to see some less popular parts of the cities I'm going to when visiting. At this stage I have only two plans set in stone:

  • Bike across the Golden Gate Bridge (again!)

  • Halloween with my family. (apparently my Aunt does the best Halloween, and this is my first (proper) Halloween in 17 years!)

Safety This is my first time travelling overseas on my own. I've done a fair bit of travelling solo this year with work, visiting ski fields and staying in hostels and lodges. I'm fairly safety conscious, I'm not going to jump in the first 'candy' van I see, and I'm not going to make myself look like a tourist. I work in the tourism industry, it's not that hard to tell the level of tourist someone is (it ranges from them practically being a local, to them walking around covered in every single knick knack they can find while riding a sheep with a kiwi hat.)

Etc...

  • I'm fortunate enough to have dual citizenship with America, and don't have to return to a job in New Zealand, so I can easily travel more after Winter is over (expect another post in 8 months time!)

  • I'm a 20 year old male with nothing tying me down back home. I'm travelling fairly light, Pack light, wash often!, and have had experience walking long distances with a pack on my back.

I think what I'm really looking for here is advice on what to see, where to go, and just general travel advice for someone going solo in the world for the first time!

Cheers from NZ!
