Traveling to Baltimore - how to know what areas to avoid? Recommendations on places to see or food to try?

I'm visiting for a few days next month to primarily see the historic ships museum. We'd be flying in to BWI and plan to take the light rail to get around. I don't suspect we'd be out after 10pm.
We've not booked a place to stay yet but looking at somewhere close to the airport, either Linthicum heights or BWI Business district.
We're only going to be in town for a day and half. Other than visiting the historic ships museum, where else should try to visit or grab food?
