Driving down to Spain from French Atlantic coast in August. Not very interested in packed resort towns, so intend to drive through San Sebastian. Much more interested in culture, nature, history. Currently have airfare back from Bilbao, but can probably change to another airport that connects to Madrid.

So, thoughts on combination of our interests (and wine), and avoidance of crowds and excessive heat.

France -> San Sebastian -> inland Pamplona, Rioja, Burgos, Bilbao,.. or

France - San Sebastian - stay coastal to Bilbao - points west like Santander and Picos de Europa?
