I love Garfield. With The Garfield Movie out this weekend, my girlfriend and I wanted to do all of the fun Garfield movie tie in stuff. Eating lasagna at Olive Garden. Seeing the movie while cosplaying as Jon and Garfield and even booking a stay at The Garfield Suite at Motel 6.
The Motel 6 Garfield Suite is a tie in where, at a handful of Motel 6's, there is one room completely decked out in Garfield merchandise like the I Think You Should Leave sketch. You have to call and ask for it, and the only one in the Los Angeles area is at the Motel 6 by LAX. So, at 10:30pm on Saturday night, after stuffing ourselves with Olive Garden lasagna, my girlfriend and I went to the hotel to check in. Me, wearing an off brand Garfield t-shirt. My girlfriend in a vintage Garfield sweatshirt. The employees even joked about how much we liked Garfield.
So weâre about to check in, they scan my credit card, and then right as Iâm about to sign my name, they say âWAIT. We double booked the room.âAnd then we saw, two registers over, a Garfield fan absolutely covered in Garfield arm tattoos.
This Garfield fan showed up at the exact same time as us, with an equally valid reservation, to also check into the one Garfield room in Los Angeles County, at the Motel 6 next to LAX.
It was a standoff. It was tense. The employees didn't know what to do.They offered us a non Garfield suite, which was a no go.Then, they offered us the Garfield suite on the only day where the room wasnât already booked, on a Monday, which by my Garfield t-shirt with âFuck Mondaysâ written on it in old English was even less of an option.
The employees were in over their heads. My girlfriend, a small, soft-spoken woman wearing a cute vintage Garfield sweatshirt was about to throw down (!!!) with the fan covered in Garfield tattoos. All so we could stay in a hotel room themed after an orange comic cat from the 70s.
After 30 minutes of escalation, tears on both sides and stressed employees, I finally said âhey if youâll give us a refund and let us take selfies in the room, weâll call it good.âI was relieved that everyone said yes. A very kind employee escorted us into The Garfield Suite. For five minutes, we took selfies in our Garfield paradise. On our way out, we thanked the employees and complimented the fan's Garfield arm tattoos.
This is how we got selfies in The Garfield Suite in the Motel 6 by the airport at midnight, and Iâm very happy about it!
