This year, I'm hoping to finally go interrailing through some European countries. At the moment, my itinerary would be:
Vienna > Salzburg > Munich > Lauterbrunnen > Milan > Venice > Rome.
In all my travels in the past, I've booked hotels etc ahead of time, but I don't want to do that on this trip, I want to be much more flexible so that I can stay somewhere a bit longer if I want to. I can use the interrail pass on any 7 days in the month, so that part isn't an issue. My biggest concerns are not finding a place to sleep if I try and book only when I arrive or a day or two ahead of time, or that those bookings will be really expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions about this? In terms of where I stay, I'm not fussed - I'm happy to share a room with others in a hostel, and actually find that a great way to meet people.
Any advice or information at all would be very gratefully received.
Thanks!
Yeah it's the flexibility I'm after, because I've never been to these places and might want to stay in one place longer than I thought (or shorter!). That's a relief to hear about still getting places to stay.
Thanks for this - I don't have any detours in mind, but there might be times where I really enjoy a certain place and find I want to stay a bit longer rather than move on, but I guess that's not a bad thing if I have to - I'll still have an amazing trip regardless. Hostel booking with refundable nights does seem to be the general consensus. 😊
Ah that's a good thing to consider as well - if there's anything going on I need to be aware of that would see lots of places booked out. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice - I didn't mean it to come across that I'm looking for something both plentiful and cheap - I know that doing things this way will be more expensive which I'm fine with, I just wasn't sure how much of a jump there was. I'll need to make sure I have lots of room in my budget.
Unfortunately, I can't avoid high season. That's why it's a big worry for me - the places I go will all be very busy at the same time.
Thanks for the tip about staying elsewhere in Switzerland, I'll have a look at those places too. I do think it'll be a mixture of booking ahead for some places and being more open for others and absorbing the cost of that.

Yeah that's definitely the case for The Last Supper, ive been on their website already. I'm also going to book the guided tour of Neuchwanstein Castle in advance. I don't mind having to be in some places on certain days, but would like a bit more flexibility around the days in between.
