How do you create space for your sounds, especially hi hats?

It seems like the spots where I want to do some hi hat slides always are on the ones where the open hats are. If I try to move them in other places they either don't sound right or interfere with the kicks or snares and what not, and don't sound good either.
should i just create the song where the open hats and hi hats are layered separately?
