Hey everyone, I have a super specific issue that no amount of googling has been able to solve.
In November-December I’m going overseas with Uni. I’ve been putting off changing my name and sex on legal documents because I have needed my passport twice this year- including for in November/December.
My uni has my passport details already so I know I can’t submit a name change now.
However, I know that Deaths, Births and Marriages hold an application for at least 3 months (that’s what my trans mates have told me) so could I get away with submitting my name change in say mid October/Early November and it not interfere with my trip or passport details. I want everything changed ASAP so I can move out with my partner and start my adult life properly but this trip is really pushing everything back so I want a cheeky way to apply for it as soon as I can without interfering with my trip and getting me stuck overseas/not in Australia.
TLDR: I’m going overseas and want to change my legal name/sex ASAP, can I get away with submitting the name change just before I leave since it takes so long?
Also should be noted: I’m a very anxious person and couldn’t find an answer to this anywhere so I just don’t want to screw myself over. I even tried chatgpt and it didn’t give me a straight answerðŸ˜
Thank you for this cause it helped my brain out- I only want to change BDM just before I leave then I’d deal with all the rest once I’m back. I thought the process was going to be so much longer from my friends experience- they all must have done something wrong 💀But yeah I don’t have enough time to change passport and that so I just want to start the process with BDM and not be like locked out of the country.
Oh wow, all my mates had such issues with their changes and it took well over 3 months? If you don’t mind me asking where abouts on the website did you find that information because I haven’t seen that before and have been relying on mates to estimate timing.

Oh that’s awesome! That’s really helpful because I am not even gunna bother updating things until I’m back I just yeah wanted to still get the ball rolling while I’m gone. Bit nervous though cause my passport photo is a bit different than what I look like on T now 😬
