does changing gp reset the wait time?

hey so the title pretty much sums it up but a friend was telling me that if you change from the GP that referred you onto a genderclinic then you have to re-apply for a referral and start back from square one. Is this the case? because I'm currently at uni which means the possibility of having to change GPs before even getting to the first appointment is very real
