I've recently started watching A League of Their Own. For the most part, I'm enjoying it. It's snappy and queer and does a good job evoking the era without needing to be excessively period accurate.
However, part of me feels a little dysphoric watching it. I love history (got a degree in it), and that love sometimes manifests itself in imagining what role I would play in the events depicted. However, with sapphic history, I can't escape the fact that there would have be no meaningful way for me to take part in it for much of history. (And yes, trans priestesses, etc, but it's important to remember that even in societies that did have a place for gender nonconforming people, that was often as third gender of some variety). It makes me feel disconnected from the past. Can anyone else relate to this feeling?
