I (ftm14, closeted) was having a conversation w/ my mum (42f) about whether i could have a haircut or not (i couldn't) and for some reason it turned into a debate abt wheter or not nb people were real, and my mum was talking abt my sister's teacher (ftm) and for some reason thought he was nb, and was like "SHE wants to be called they >:( and i don't feel comfortable with that cause they is plural and im gonna call it an it" ans i was like "mum, thats disrespectful as hell" and she was like "I'm a doctor, i go by biology" (shes a vet) and i was like "okay, but gender has nothing to do with biology" and she was like "why?! Are you an "it"?" Qnd i was like "...no?" And my sister (10f) came in and was like (in reference to me) "why is she so upset?" And my mum fcking said "no, no, no... why is IT upset" LIKE, WHAT THE FUCKIE THAT WAS FUCKING UNCALLED FOR MUM! >:(
They is literally how you would refer to any RANDOM PERSON who’s gender you don’t know, a voice comes on the phone and you friend sitting next to you says “Who are they?” The friend having no idea of their gender due to not being the person who answered the phone. It’s very simple in fact and should be respected, if you don’t know who you are talking to or about then how can you assume anything about them including their gender?? This is why they is the correct way to refer to all people period.
TLDR. They isn’t just plural ur mom is dumb as rocks.
