Hey r/trance,
First, welcome back :)
What's Up?
As you might be aware, last week we conducted a poll to ask the subreddit how, if at all, we should participate in the planned protest against Reddit's upcoming site changes.
After two days, the vast majority (>70%) said we should remain closed in some form, with the largest proportion saying we should remain closed from June 12th through June 14th.
You can see our official announcement here and additional details here.
So What's Happened Since?
Since then, there have been a numerous things that have happened, and also numerous things that haven't:
- The CEO of Reddit conducted an AMA
- A leaked internal memo from the CEO was posted on news sites.
- Advertisers have started to take notice.
- Numerous news sites have covered the events: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- AskHistorians provided a nice overview of what's going on.
- Community members have been tracking subreddits through sites and even Twitch streams.
What changes has Reddit made, if any?
There have been small changes to Reddit's position (see additional information here and here); however, there has not been any substantive changes since last week.
Okay, what's next?
So, with the knowledge of what has changed, what remains the same starting July 1st, and the actions and words of the CEO regarding these changes -- combined with our original poll -- we want to get the community's input on next steps that we should take.
Subreddits and their communities are unique, and each are taking different approaches in how they respond to the events of the past week. For our subreddit, it's important that we ask you all, the users and subscribers of r/trance, what you feel is the path we should take.
What are these poll options?
The options available to us, and as listed in the poll:
- We remain closed indefinitely. Indefinitely means that we stay private until such time that Reddit has addressed the concerns brought up by communities regarding upcoming changes.
- We remain closed through June 30th. This extends our protest through the end of the month, as July 1st is the start of the proposed changes by Reddit.
- We open subreddit in restricted mode. This means that our subreddit is back open to browse past submissions, comments, and the wiki. However, the ability to submit links / new music / discussion will be turned off. This is what we are currently temporarily in. If this option is chosen, we would get feedback from you all on length of restricted mode (e.g., cut-off date like June 30th, indefinite, etc.)
- We open the subreddit back to normal. The subreddit should be open to submissions and discussions again as was done pre-June 12th.
Where can we discuss this? Where can we discuss trance?
Feel free to discuss our next steps in this thread. If you would like to discuss trance for the time being, please use our general discussion post located here.
As always if you have questions, feel free to reach out!
On behalf of r/trance, we appreciate your thoughts and time in advance.
