AppHarvest is a Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) startup which recently competed a SPAC merger with Novus Capital to go public at $1bn valuation.

Why i like the company :

  • They have 30 times more yield per acre and uses 90% less water than conventional ways.
    • Partnered with multiple Universities,AgTech companies and Dutch govt.
    • Netherlands is roughly twice the size of NJ and is the second largest Ag exporter only after US, which suggests how good their technology must be.
  • Strategically located in Appalachia, which has good rainfalls, can reach 70% of the US population withins a day drive, unlike imported food which takes may take days, so fresh food longer shelf life for vendors.
  • They have a 2.8 million sq ft facility i.e close to 50 football field under glass, growing non gmo food, plan to build 12 more facilities by 2025.
  • Partnered with all major stores - Walmart,Costco,Publix,Target etc.
  • This is the way of the future, by 2050 we will need two planet Earths to feed the population at current yields.
  • People
    • CEO - Jonathan Webb, comes from Solar energy background, I like his energy and passion in all his interviews, according to him AgTech now is where Solar sector was 7-8 years back, so huge potential.
    • CFO of Impossible Foods jumping ship to join APPH. Source
    • Martha Stewart is one of the founders.
  • In my research I also noticed that the timelines to build the first facility weren't impacted by Covid.

I have picked just the major points, this Investor Presentation has a lot more details.

My personal take is that future belongs to AgTech, and given the scale at which they want to grow, they will do really well in the coming years.
