Pacing an ultra
Post Body

I have a friend of a friend who's running the Wasatch 100, and my friend asked me if I'd be willing to pace her. I'm a runner, but haven't done much trail running, the longest being a half marathon. But I'm interested in getting into more trail stuff and I feel like this would be a fun way to get my feet wet. I'm also in the middle of training for NYC, longest road run is 16 miles at this point in the training.

The problem: I just learned that the part she wants a pacer on doesn't have another pacer trade off for 30 miles, and at 9000 feet and a lot of vertical up and down. That feels way beyond my training. I've asked a few friends who have run this race. One said not a good idea, the other said, go for it--you're walking all the flats and uphills and just running the downhills.

She's not going to be particularly fast (shooting for 32-34 hours), and I'd be joining her at 65 miles, so I don't think I'll be holding her back. I don't think she really has any other options for pacers, since she's from out of town, and I've made it really clear that this feels beyond my training. And I kind of want to try it for the challenge. But what are your thoughts? Is this dumb to try?
