Torrenting client won’t seed after download

Please help! I recently got an invite to a private torrenting site and there is a list of acceptable torrents that a member can use. I’ve always used Vuze, so I’m not familiar with any others, but I ended up going with Transmission. The client worked fine to download, but once completed, it will not seed! When I go to preferences, it shows “port check site is down.” How do I get the client to seed in order to keep up my ratio? Any help would be most appreciated.
