Why were some women hurdling the barrier before the water (and landing deeper in the pit) in the steeplechase

Post Body

Former high school and DIII track and field athlete so I don’t know much. For steeple chase you normally jump on top of the barrier then over it to try and clear the water. All the men did this, most of the women did this. I noticed in the race though a few women were consistently hurdling the barrier and landing deep in the water. Why is this?

I assume they decided it would result in less energy used, perhaps they wouldn’t have cleared the pit anyway. But I hadn’t seen this before (I don’t normally watch steeplechase to be fair).
