Which shock cavalry to use for Lu Bu's faction?

Which shock cavalry should I be using when playing as Lu Bu's faction? In addition to the common pool he has three faction-unique units - Xiliang, Heavy Xiliang, and Flying Riders.
I assume the optimal unit will change through the game and depending on my finances, but generally speaking which units would you recommend? I am playing in Romance mode if that matters.
