How do you beat Skirmisher units in FoTS?

I wanted to know of a way to counter Skirm units (with superior range as well). I just started playing online and am getting my ass handed to me. I can't charge cavalry into skirm units like in the olden days, cav usually fall like flies from a volley. And for that matter how do you counter Skirm cav? right now I only have a quite Immobile army in my available unit roster. Also any guides or tips on how to get gud on online battles would be appreciated thank you.
