I didn't realize it when the trade for Poeltl happened, I was too annoyed we didn't go for a tank and that we gave up a first round pick but here's the facts.
Jakob Poeltl is a First Round Pick big that is someone we would have wanted to draft with a Future FRP.
We gave up a top 6 protected pick meaning if the pick lands in top 6 we get it back. Jakob was picked at 9th. So basically unless we would have found someone better than him from pick 7-9, we basically got an experienced starting quality first round big.
WHY ARE WE COMPLAINING? Maybe Masai should have done more, but this was a great trade. Especially when you factor in any drafted player takes time to develop and there is no guarantee they would be good enough to:
- get a spot on the rotation
- be a starting quality player
- to actually fit in the system
- most importantly would fit with the team vibes
Literally we got all of that for Birch and 2 Second rounders. Jakob was our first round pick, went to Spurs, trained under pops, became a high IQ shot blocking, low post scoring big. The chances that our 2024 1st round pick falls in 7/8 is rare, on top of that rare that whoever we draft will be as good as Poeltl is rare.
30 points/9 rebounds/6 blocks on 88% shooting is just a taste of what Poeltl can bring.
