Need advice on buying a road bike!

Hello,
I am looking to purchase a road bike for the first time, I have been using mountain bikes until this point. I am a fit adult about 5ft 11inches. My price range is about 1000 dollars. The bike will primarily be ridden to for leisure and to the gym. I will mostly be driving on bike paths. I want something that goes fast and is not too difficult to handle.
