I recently was made aware of this particular tornado - just everything about this storm is bizarre - and to top it off, it is still the most powerful anticyclonic tornado ever recorded in North America. Wikipedia briefly describes the event but still leaves me puzzled: 1981 West Bend tornado - Wikipedia. In a more detailed way, could someone here explain or theorize to me what happened for this unusual, "non-severe looking" storm to even drop a powerful clockwise tornado? There is a paper study that was released subsequently after the tornado, but it's a little too wordy/advanced for my basic weather comprehension. What's also strange about this whole thing, is that it seems largely forgotten about.
