What makes it so addictive is that people feel REALLY GOOD after taking it, it messes with their brain chemistry by providing a reward for taking fentanyl. The addiction comes from the body's "need" to get back that high as often as possible.
What makes breaking an addiction so difficult is that there is a mismatch between what your logical mind tells you and what your body urges you to do. Your mind tells you not to use and buy fentanyl anymore, but your brain chemistry causes an urge and strong desire to get it. Of course a person can decide not to buy the fentanyl, there is always free will, but note this happens despite the strong urge to get the drug in addition to potential withdrawal symptoms. For the vast majority of people, the urge to use wins out over logical thought.
