Another post in this sub got me thinking on how Tolkien almost seems to have a checklist that a character must follow in order to be fully condemned. Melkor was captured by the Valar, Sauron was captured by the Númenóreans, and Gollum was captured by Sam and Frodo, and every time they had a sniff of freedom/leniency they eventually went back to the exact same evil they were committing before containment. These examples seem to fit pretty neatly into Tolkien's Catholicism in that the characters are required to explicitly refuse any opportunity of redemption before being doomed. So my question is are there any other examples of an evil character being captured and almost immediately going back to doing evil?
