Height reduction surgery is a thing?

Today I learned about a woman who was 6'7½" and had 4" of her legs removed to make herself shorter. She lived and was able to walk until she died in 2014. Below is a link to a NY times article about her surgery and her obituary.

There was also a newspaper article from a newspaper in Tuscon that reported on her being able to walk out of the hospital with crutches and that she'd begin physical therapy but I didnt grab the link bevause they wanted me to pay to sign up for their site.
